A shopping experience in Zurich, Switzerland
Zurich is a fine city to shop in though things can be a bit expensive there, there are a lot of quaint shops and you can get all sorts from clothes to chocolates to watches to pastries to buy.
You may want to start with the world famous Bahnhofstrasse, it’s a tree lined street that links the Zurich main train station (Hauptbahnhof) to Burkliplatz which is on the lake (Lake Zurich). Departmental stores like Jelmoli and Globus can be found on this street and they stock designer brands.
You can get Swiss specialties like Swiss chocolates and truffles made by Sprunglit here; Barth Bucher, a bookshop on Bahnhofstrasse stocks books like cookery books, travel books and bestsellers.
You can also get shoes and clothes from shops like H & M and Bally, beautiful jewelry from jewelry shops like Bucherer. Things are a bit expensive but this is to be expected considering the goods stocked, however it is worth it.
Another area that is renowned for shopping is Helviaplatz; it is located to the west of the main train station.
There is a flea market there and you can get good bargains there. There are about 400 stores there and the market is open on Saturdays between 8am to 4 pm. There is another flea market at Burkliplatz which is open from 6am to 3.30 pm on Saturdays during the months of May to October; it’s an interesting market to shop in.
You can also stroll to Lowenstrasse; it is situated west of Bahnhofstrasse from the main train station. You will find Migros (a departmental store) from which you can purchase Swiss watches and Frey (a Swiss chocolate), cheese, ham, fresh fruit and fresh delicious bread; also situated at Lowenstrasse are lower range shops.
Another area for shopping is Shopville at the subway, beneath the platforms, at Hauptbahnhof.
You may also want to check out Schipfe near the banks of Limmat River; you can get custom made articles there, there are also boutiques.
Niederdorf is one of Zurich’s oldest districts and it houses trendy shops that stock articles like clothes, antiques and even books.
There are also small inexpensive cafes and restaurants like Rheinfelder Bierhalle, Swiss Chuchi where you can get a bite if you get hungry while shopping. At Augustinergrasse are situated charming shops where you can shop.
If you want to shop for toys there is a great toy store at Weinplatz called Pastorini Spielzeug.
The opening hours of shops in Zurich is worth noting, as the hours could be a bit unusual. Most of the stores in the city don’t open on Sundays, but shops at the Stadelhofen station and Shopville shops are open on Sundays.
Also many small shops in Niederdorf district open either late in the morning or late afternoon and they don’t open at all on Mondays. However, most shops in the heart of the city are usually open between 9am to 6.30 pm from Monday to Friday and on Saturdays from 8am to 4pm.
My next shopping experience will be in tax free Dubai, but for now I am just looking to laze around in the sun, where I will start by looking for my cheap flights to Sharm el Sheikh.
